The Sevenoaks Weald Parish Council

Weald Parish Council forms the first tier of local government in this area. It receives a “precept”, an annual sum of money collected through council tax, to spend on parish matters. On behalf of the parish, the Parish Council owns, maintains and manages the Memorial Hall Field, the Recreation Ground, the Allotments and the former Methodist Chapel, now the home of the Community Shop, and various pockets of land around the village. The Parish Council also holds a lease on the Village Green. Many of the things that affect local people, such as education, transport and road safety, rubbish collection and housing, are dealt with by Kent County Council and Sevenoaks District Council. But the Parish Council works closely with the area’s representatives on Sevenoaks District Council – Councillors Julia Thornton and Roddy Hogarth – and on Kent County Council – Councillor Margot McArthur – to try to ensure that residents’ interests and concerns are heard. The Parish Council has formed a Traffic Action Group to look at road safety in the village and has persuaded Kent County Council to introduce traffic/speed control measures in parts of the village, and will continue to press for more action.

The Parish Council is also consulted on planning applications relating to property in the parish and information on such matters can be found via the planning tab on the Parish Council website .

Rosie Wood
Chair
Rosie was born and raised in Sevenoaks. She moved to Bayleys Hill in 1995 and was elected to the Parish Council in 2002, becoming chair in 2011. She has three children and eight grandchildren, all living locally, and continues to be active in the property business established by her late husband. From the start of her time in the chair, Rosie has had the main aim of uniting the community around the “four pillars” of the church, school, pub and shop. Rosie says: “My ambition has been to make the Parish Council a friendly and approachable local government body, aware of the daily needs of the village while maintaining the upkeep and, above all, protecting our wonderful community.”
Lucy Harris
Vice Chair
Lucy was married in St George’s Church and joined other family members in the village when she moved here in 1996. She worked in the insurance industry, specialising in the financial institutions sector, for more than 25 years and has two sons, now both at university. She became a Parish Councillor in 2011. Lucy says: “With three dogs to walk, every day is spent exploring local footpaths and the village, and this gives a great appreciation of our beautiful surroundings.”
